  1. Reboot or power off server
  2. At the console press any key or for CentOS 6, press F2
  3. This gets you into the grub screen
  4. Select the line that says kernel and click ‘e’
  5. Add a space and then the word ‘single’
  6. Click ‘b’ to boot and you will boot up in single user mode
  7. type passwd root and enter the new password when prompted
  8. type reboot and you have reset the root password
