What is an SPF record and how do I use one?

SPF stands for Sender Policy Framework

Basically an SPF record enables a receiving mail server to lookup and determine whether the sending server is authorized to send emails from the domain in which the email originated.

This helps prevent email spoofing, where the sender spoofs the “FROM” address of the email.

The record is added to the DNS zone of the originating email address. So only the authorised domain administrator can actually add and edit the record which enables the security

The format of the record is as follows:

v=spf1 a mx ptr ip4:123.123.123.123 ~all

This example shows that any A or MX record can send email as well as IP: 123.123.123.123, and that all PTR records resolve to outbound mailservers.
