Cisco VPN client fails on Windows 7 with the following error:

Secure VPN Connection terminated locally by the client
Reason 442: Failed to enable virtual adapter

This is usually because Windows 7 and Vista reports a duplicate IP address detected.

Subsequent connections fail with the same message, but the OS does not report the duplicate IP.

To resolve the problem carry out the following:

Run CMD as an administrator (right-click and “run as admin”)

reg add HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesTcpipParameters /v ArpRetryCount /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Reboot the PC.

Next open > Network and Sharing Center

Click > Change adapter settings

Right-click on the wireless adapter settings find the share tab and unshare the connection.

The VPN should now work.
